AHIS 2/21/08 The Big Picture - Gave Americans new form of government o Grand experiment o Could a republic work in a large area? - Wounded British empire economically o Liberty for white men o Americans will have to fight British again. o Liberty talk changes expectations – slowly - Precedent: Colonies can overthrow - The meaning of Revolution o 18 th century meaning before French Revolution Government changes Violent aspect only after Reign of Terror o Difference between the Revolution (ideas) And the war for independence o True revolutions is the creation of a new government Shaping the Federal Union - War is over: States began constitution-making right away - British model of government: Much admired for balance o Monarchy – King o Aristocracy – House of Lords o Democracy – House of Commons o Colonist saw as corrupted o King had bought influence in Commons o Aristocracy questioned Class less important Yet America still hierarchical o We would use as models - Early State Governments o Notion of creating a government is remarkable o Traditional fear of Republics
