ce Management Exam I LECTURE OBJECTIVES Chapter 1 - Management  1-1) Describe what management is The basic definition of management, as presented in the text, is getting work done  through others. 1-2) Explain the four functions of management Planning:  involves determining organizational goals and a means for achieving them.  The question “What business are we in?” is at the heart of strategic planning. Organizing:  deciding where decisions will be made, who will do what jobs and tasks,  and who will work for whom in the company. Leading:  Involves inspiring and motivating workers to work hard to achieve  organizational goals.  Controlling:  monitoring progress toward goal achievement and taking corrective action  when progress isn’t being made.    1-3) Describe different kinds of managers  Top managers (CEO, COO, CFO):  Responsible for the overall direction of the  organization. Create context for change. Develop employees’ commitment to and  ownership of the company’s performance. Must create a positive organizational culture  through language and action. Monitor business environments.   Middle managers (plant manager, regional manager, divisional manager):  responsible for setting objectives consistent with top management’s goals for planning  and implementing subunit strategies for achieving those objectives. Coordinate and link  groups, departments, divisions within company. Monitor and manage the performance of  the subunits and individual managers. First-line managers (office managers, shift supervisor, department manager):  manage the performance of entry-level employees who are directly responsible for  producing a company’s goods and services. They encourage, monitor, and reward. Teach  entry-level employees. can hire and fire, Team leaders:  Primarily responsible for facilitating team activities toward accomplishing  a goal. Aren’t responsible for whole team performance. Responsible for managing  internal and external relationships.

1-4) Explain the major roles & sub-roles that managers perform in their jobs  do not need to know  **Really?? ^She said in class we’d need to know the 3 major roles, but she wouldn’t test us on the subroles  (figurehead vs. leader vs. liaison, etc.).  SWEET!! Interpersonal Roles  (face-to-face communication) Figurehead – perform ceremonial duties like greeting company visitors,  speaking at the opening of a new facility, or representing the company at a  community luncheon to support local charities Leader – motivate and encourage workers to accomplish organizational  objectives
