ASOC 2/12/08 Omi and Winant “Racial Formation” - Trying to create a theoretical framework to understand race and racism - Omi and Winant create a theory called racial formation o Socio-historical process, by which racial categories are created, inhabited, transformed, and destroyed. Race is formed by racial projects. Racial Projects are interpretations, representations, explanations of racial dynamics. Racial Projects reorganize and redistribute resources along racial lines. Racial Projects give meaning to race and do the ideological work. Neo-conservative racial project Do not notice race Act in color-blind manner Race can play no part in government State policy should not require, recommend, or award different status according to race Liberal racial project Race matters Government, state should take steps to take race into account when forming policy o Neo-conservative and liberal projects are shaped by their o Racial Formation and Racism
