The Empirical Formula of a Magnesium Compound There are a variety of ways of determining the formula of a chemical compound. Recently you have had experience with the method which uses oxidation states. Although the writing of formulas from oxidation states is mechanical and seems almost unrelated to chemical experimentation, these oxidation states have been determined by extensive experimental work. This exercise presents an opportunity for you to experience one elementary process leading to formula determination. In this lab exercise you will collect data which will allow you later to determine an empirical formula. The empirical formula of a compound is the simplest whole number ratio of moles of each substance present. Notice the specific requirements: a) It is a mole ratio. b) The ratio must contain only whole numbers. c) The ratio must not be capable of being reduced to smaller whole numbers. PROCEDURE 1.
