Procedure:
Sphere
Method 1: Attach spring scale to sphere and use to measure the mass of the sphere.
Submerge the sphere completely and measure the mass of the sphere once again. Use
equation (2) to determine the density.
Method 2: Use a three balance beam to determine a more accurate mass of the sphere.
Determine the radius of the sphere and use the radius to determine the volume of the
sphere. Utilize equation (1) to determine density and compare with method 1.
Wooden Block
Method 1: Float the block of wood and measure the fraction of wood under water. Using
equation (3) determine the density of the block.
Method 2: Measure the mass of the wood block and determine the density of it using the
volume of the wooden block measured by its height, length and width. Compare the two
densities.
