1 Social Studies Resources Guide for Teachers ECE 465 08/16/2020 This resource guide is to help teachers who will be teaching 1 st grade social studies. You will find a brief description of three different social study standards as well as suggested lesson plans, tools and resources. Standard:
2 1.3 Students know and understand the symbols, icons, and traditions of the United States that provide continuity and a sense of community across time. 3. Identify American symbols, landmarks, and essential documents, such as the flag, bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, U.S. Constitution, and Declaration of Independence, and know the people and events associated with them. Potential lesson plan for students: Objective: Students will be able to recognize symbols relating to the United States and why they are significant. Items that will be needed: A box, The Liberty Bell (print an image of the internet and laminate it), image or postcard of The White House, Picture or hat of President Trump, a picture of a bald eagle, a laminated copy of the Declaration of Independence, and the American Flag. Construction paper, pencils, markers, and glue. Preprint vocabulary terms for each item that you are displaying out of the box. Practice: Today we're going to make a book out of construct paper. We 're going to draw pictures of these things in our books and place these symbols in our book. Then have the students out the preprinted vocabulary terms onto the papers in their book. Its important you show the students first how to do this. With marker, crayons or pencils have the children draw the image of each item.
