Film Review #2 6 November 2007 American History X is a film about a young white supremacist Derek Vinyard played by Edward Norton and his impact on his younger brother, Danny’s life. Derek’s father was shot by a black man while trying to put out a fire when he was young. Derek’s natural hatred towards this unjust crime is stroked by local white supremacist. When this white supremacist approaches Derek after this, he brain washes Derek into believing that his father’s death was an act of racism and he should stand up and get revenge for it. Derek then proceeds to gather up other young whites in his neighborhood and form a white supremacist gang. He becomes such an icon that even when he is sentenced to three years in jail for the murder of two men – one of which he crushed the skull in on a curb with his foot – his friends welcome him back with open arms and new members of the gang see him almost as a god. Derek however, changed in prison. He no longer believes in the white supremacist rhetoric after seeing respected skinheads working with Hispanics. His skinhead friends then rape him for turning his back on them over this issue. Meanwhile, he has made friends with the black man he does his required laundry
