Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen: I am here this evening to talk about the effects of abuse and neglect on the brain development in young children. A baby’s brain develops as they interact with their parents. Crying is their way of communicating with us. When they cry and mom and dad come to their side, it’s strengthening the neuronal pathways that help them learn how to get their needs met. Yet, when babies who cry and get abused or neglected then they learn how to cope with negative conditions and learn you can’t rely on people. “The brain's development can literally be altered by these experiences, resulting in negative impacts on the child's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth” (HHS 1). When a child is neglected instead of forming bonds with the parents and others, their brain is forced to develop differently. They then need to figure out ways to survive without the support of their parents. The part of the brain that figures this out is very active which leaves other parts
