Description and Application of Language and SymbolsLooking through a psychoanalytic lens, we observe a wide variety of terms andsymbols that from a surface level seem mundane and common but once analysed, wediscover many underlying meanings we didn’t even think of before which would only bepossible when (changing) into a psychological mindset and use our critical thinking skillsto unravel the hidden connotations behind what is visually seen/read/heard.Not only do they unravel meanings about the characters and the events takingplace throughout the piece but they also unravel ideas and concepts about thewriter/author/producer/composer through a foreign context to mask their identities. This is done successfully by applying Freud’s and Jung’s theories as well aspsychological language and terms to fully comprehend pieces through apsychoanalytical perspective/approach.Note: When analysing the media piece, ask students to pay careful attention to not justwhat is happening in the foreground, but in the background as well.
