Religion 214 Erica Grohol Essay #1 – Thomas Aquinas on Free Will March 3, 2008 The traditional concept of free will enters the mainstream of Western Philosophy in metaphysical questions about human responsibility for moral behavior . Many modern debates about free will are often couched in terms of responsibility for moral and criminal behavior . Early Christian philosopher St. Tomas Aquinas has framed the issues surrounding free will in his Summa Theologiae , the belief hinges on a metaphysical belief in non-physical reality . The will is seen as a faculty of the soul or mind , which is understood as standing outside of the physical world and its governing laws . Hence , for many , a belief in materialism is taken to imply a denial of free will . St. Thomas Aquinas believes that everything comes from God . This includes material things , all actions , and concepts . Aquinas also acknowledges that sin exists in the world , and that man sins . Although God has never sinned , and God is all-good , since all things come from God , then sinful actions must also come from God according to Aquinas . However , Aquinas argument is simplistic and drawn from linear thinking . The

relationship between God and sinful actions is quite indirect . Aquinas also contradicts himself in arguing that God is not the cause of sin , but is the cause of sinful actions . Both must be either true or false , one cannot be one way without the other . The reasoning for God not being the cause of sin can also be used to show that God is not the cause of sinful actions . Aquinas argument for God as the cause of sinful actions starts with God being the cause of all things . If this follows , then humans and everything about them are the products of God . Humans have free will . Humans often use the gift of free will to sin
