Midterm Study Guide Some things to know: 1. Why was Socrates called wise by the oracle? Because he knew he was not wise 2. Distinguish between Locke's view of reason, revelation and enthusiasm. That is we have faith in what is disclosed by revelation and which cannot be discovered by reason. 3. Distinguish between an inductive and a deductive argument. Deductive the premises provide a guarantee of the truth of the conclusion; Inductive the premises provide reasons supporting the probable truth of the conclusion. 4. How do Descartes, Berkeley, and Hume differ with regards to sense experience? For Descartes, the dualism is quite explicit: the problem is how on Earth to explain that Mind is capable of corresponding to the material world though it be of totally different substance with no apparent point of contact.
