5.2 Settlement Patterns and Survey Methods 1. What affects land-use patterns? a. Largely dependent on cultural traditions, accessibility of resources, and the environment b. Explains why certain crops are present in one region, but not in others – all depends on agricultural land use! c. Lots of it has to do with who colonized which area 2. Rural Survey Patterns a. Long Lot (French) [Physical Boundaries] i. Land is divided into narrow lots perpendicular to a river, road, or canal ii. These lots stretch from buildings or houses to the river, road, etc. iii. Gives everyone equal access to the “resource” (i.e. the river, road, or whatever else the lot connects to) b. Metes and Bounds (Colonial British) [Physical Boundaries] i. Defines the boundaries of a piece of land based on the physical landscape, directions, and distances ii. Metes = a specific, measured boundary iii. Bounds = a general boundary (waterways, walls, existing buildings, etc.)
