Pre-Class Assignment Week 7 Concept: Addiction Hondros Village Patient Remember Brandon Sharpton? You cared for him in previous courses. In high school he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This is his history from Nursing 176: Brandon Sharpton is now 19 years old. He is in college in a pre-med program. He shares with you during a clinic visit that he is much stressed because he knows getting into med school is very competitive and everyone who applies will be 4.0 students who have engaged in many extracurricular types of activities. He is active in sports and works as a phlebotomist at the local hospital to "get his foot in the door and connect with medical personnel". However, he is very stressed because he isn't doing as well academically as he would like. He also doesn't get much sleep and had many colds over the last winter session. Brandon finished his undergraduate program and was admitted into medical school. He is in the first year. During his undergraduate program he found the science courses difficult. He would take drugs to stay up all night and study. He also attended many parties and often times drank heavily. He admitted to drinking a "couple of six packs a week". However, he was very bright even though he stressed about doing well. He is now in medical school and the courses are more difficult. This is still not a problem for him because he is continuing the behavior that helped him succeed in his previous degree. He is now using other drugs such as marijuana to relax when he drinks and cocaine and occasionally "meth" when he needs to have "a lot of energy". 1
