FBI INVESTIGATION 2 FBI Investigation Overview In criminal justice, a federal investigation is deemed the first process. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents investigate potential law violations to determine whether a crime was committed, uncover parties involved, and gather evidence about the crime (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n. d.). The federal investigation starts when a credible report is filed at any FBI offices –sometimes investigation starts when defendants who want leniency give a credible criminal lead. Likewise, a federal investigation is triggered by data gathered by other law agencies such as CIA and civil investigations. In the Anthrax Case, 2001, the investigation started through Newark, Miami, New York, Washington, D.C., New Haven, and Baltimore FBI field offices (U.S. DOJ, 2010). After the investigation is opened, the federal agents work alongside federal prosecutors, who provide legal advice and assist the agents in gathering legal documents, including search warrants and subpoenas.
