Chapter 6 Terms (2) 1. Mercy Otis Warren , The Group She was a prominent playwright and essayist. She was one of the most important female influences of the revolutionary era. She pushed to aid the advancement of education for women. Along with Abigail Adams, she was one of the most important figures in making the ideas of women heard. The Group was one of works, it was a satire about the king and the events following his interference with Massachusetts. She was the first female playwright to gain “national” acclaim. 2. Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom A document written and proposed by Jefferson in the Virginia General assembly. The idea was to separate church from state. The idea was to continue the reform of the Untied States and begin to start new ways of governing in the United States. This was an early attempt to start a secular government. 3. John Dickinson and the Articles of Confederation John Dickson was a Politician and lawyer in the early US. He refused to sign the Declaration of Independence; however, after the Unites States became independent he decided to help draft a way to start a new government without corruption. In 1777, his ideas called the Articles of Confederation were sent out to congress and were sent to each state for ratification. The primary idea was the citizens were citizens of their state first the n of the United States as whole. 4. Ordinance of 1785 In 1785, congress adopted laws and guidelines to establish their vast amount of territory north of the Ohio River Valley. The law established the basic idea for a town settlement and how settlements would be designed and divided. It allotted 6 miles square for a township. Every township would be divided into subdivision and they
