Discussion for Experiment number 17: Oxidation of Alcohol In this experiment we were concerned with learning about the oxidation of ethanol to produce ethanal, we do this by studying potassium dichromate. Basically what we are after is to calculate the rate of the reaction by using a spectrophotometer to measure it. We are suppose to use a computer to come up with all of our data, but instead the data was handed to use at the beginning of class making it so we didn’t even need to do the experiment. Though this seemed like a good idea, it makes the lab complicated for me to understand because I do not get to see the experiment visually. Seeing as we didn’t do the experiment, it makes it hard for me to understand where this data is truly coming from and does not produce a good idea of the experiment in my mind. But I will try to make things clear, bear with me though. Several methods and many oxidizing agents can oxidize alcohol. One of these agents being potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7), which we used and produced the
