Although it may seem as any ordinary coverage of a concert, Bob Marley: The Legend Live is a DVD that effectively depicts the unprecedented talent and artistry of the ever-famous Bob Marley & The Wailers. Found in the Trojan Video Archive, the concert takes place at The Santa Barbara Country Bowl on November 25 th , 1979; the last recorded performance before Marley’s death to cancer in May of1981. Being the first Jamaican reggae band to have international success, Bob Marley & The Wailers performed music about spirituality, the struggles of poor Jamaicans, and portrayed the typical reggae sound, which includes a variety of instruments and the piano playing off beats. Reggae developed in the sixties due to the effect of the Black Power Movement in the United States on Jamaican musicians. The original Jamaican musical genre, ska, was up-tempo and, along with the Rastafarian religion, helped to spawn reggae. Similar to American Rhythm & Blues, ska bands had rhythm sections consisting of piano, bass, guitar, drums, and a horn section that usually included brass instruments and saxophones. One can see a band member playing each of these instruments behind Marley as he is singling and dancing onstage. The Rastafarian religion focused on slavery and salvation, combined with special terminology, the use of marijuana, and dreadlocks - the hairstyle that Marley famously sported.
