Protocol Lab #5 Proteins : Purpose : To determine the structure and function of cell proteins, including individual monomers, and to determine how Biurets reagent is able to detect the presence of proteins. Scientific Hypothesis : Adding Biurets reagent to a protein solution will cause the solution to turn a purplish color. Null Hypothesis : Adding Biurets reagent to a protein solution will not cause the solution to change color. Predictions : 1. If Biurets reagent is added to water, then no reaction will occur. 2. If Biurets reagent is added to pepsin, then a reaction will occur and the solution will turn purplish in color. 3. If Biurets reagent is added to albumin, then a reaction will occur and the solution will turn purplish in color. 4. If Biurets reagent is added to glycine, then a small reaction will occur and the solution will turn a faint pinkish color. 5. If Biurets reagent is added to glucose, then no reaction will occur. 6. If Biurets reagent is added to glycerol, then no reaction will occur. 7. If Biurets reagent is added to glycogen, then no reaction will occur.
