Jake Dew Abnormal Psychology January 22, 2007 John Nash John Nash, though a genius, was plagued with schizophrenia at only thirty years old. Nash had a relatively ordinary childhood. In college he switched majors several times before he got to mathematics. He found this to be his passion. He graduated from Carnegie Tech, having maintained a full scholarship all four years. When he applied to Princeton, one of his recommendations from former teachers read only, “This man is a genius.” And so he would be considered for the rest of his life. At grad school Nash studied game theory, which he then applied to create a theory that is still used today. Genius… yes… schizophrenic… yes. He began to teach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology after he graduated from Princeton. That is where he met his wife, Alecia Larde. One year after their marriage, Nash began to develop debilitating schizophrenia. Alecia, having put up with months of it, checked him into a psychiatric ward at a local hospital. Nash eventually got out and quit his job and left to go to Europe.
