Asthma Asthma is a condition in which a person’s lungs become inflamed, swell, and fill with mucus. This physiological response, called an asthma attack, can make it difficult for an individual to breathe and can be life threatening. An asthma attack is typically caused by environmental pollutants such as dust, pet hair, pollen, or other pollutants. Treatment usually takes the form of a self-administered medicine delivered by an inhaler, a medical device used to deliver an aerosolized medicine orally. James has asthma and his doctor wants him to track his exposures to environmental pollutants, his symptoms, and his medication use. To make the monitoring as easy as possible, the doctor prescribed James a smart inhaler. This type of inhaler connects digitally to an app on both James’ phone and on a computer in his doctor’s office. It warns James when he has entered an area of high pollution, reminds him to take his medication, prompts him to record his symptoms, and communicates all this data to his doctor.
