Light Emission from Heating Jake Lowey A2 Honors Chemistry Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this lab is to determine what the mystery salts are based on the colors they emit when heated. This is based on the emission spectrum that every element emits when energy, this time in the form of heat, is added to it. Since every element has a unique emission spectrum, it is assumed that from observing what colors are emitted when heated by a Bunsen burner, that the mystery salts will be able to be identified by comparing them to known samples of other salts that are to be heated. Procedure: Put on lab safety equipment. Gather up all the needed equipment which include: o One large beaker, one smaller beaker, wooden coffee sticks, a Bunsen burner and accessories, a lighter, known samples of salts of Strontium, Potassium, Sodium, Barium, and Copper as well as the unknown samples A, B, and C. Fill large beaker with tap water and smaller with distilled water.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
