The Next Test As I will show shortly, in recent years a large and growing number of U.S. allies and adversaries— especially in the Middle East—have questioned American commitment to back up its declared goals—that is, they question the Nation’s credibility. Hence, the way the United States conducts itself in the next test of its resolve will be unusually consequential for its position as a global power.
