ADHD can be diagnosed in children as early as age 3 and continue to last throughout adulthood (NIMH, 2019). There is no known cure for ADHD, butdifferent treatment options are available to ease symptoms of this disorder. Individuals seeking information or direction concerning their health or health care have been increasingly turning to the internet for answers (Bundorf, Wagner, Singer, & Baker, 2006). Even though there are many websites that discuss ADHD, that does not mean that they are all accurate and reliable. It is important for an individual to determine a reliable source for information they are seeking. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) provides a website explaining ADHD that is very beneficial and informative based on its authority, accuracy, and objectivity. One of the most important aspects of determining a website’s credibility is its authority. Authority reassures the reader that the author or organization responsible for creating the websitehas the proper knowledge, qualifications, and expertise to publish that information (Elayyan, 2016). As stated on the NIMH (2017) website, NIMH is part of the twenty-seven institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health and is a federal agency whose purpose is toconduct research on mental health disorders (para. 1). With NIMH being a government agency, whose purpose is to inform and educate the public about different mental disorders, the authority is already established. There are many authors involved in providing information on the NIMH 1
