Maddi Williams MUSC 324 Africa The JVC/Smithsonian Folkways Video Anthology of Music and Dance of Africa Surroundings The surroundings for these pieces were all different. They were all located outside, usually on sand or grass. Sometimes there were costumes and decorations, but most of the time the performances seemed spontaneous. There were no assigned seats and if a member in the audience was feeling the music they were welcome to join in the dancing or playing. The performers and audiences really all shared the same space. You really could not go wrong; anything is possible in African music. Audience Everyone attended the music festivities. Families, men, women, and children were all present. There were young and older people present. The crowed was mainly all Africans but of every age. They all really enjoyed the music and sometimes felt like participating. It is really a community event to play African music.
