Ong Ralph Ong Professor Lasley ENGL 1A 2 October 2011 Our Inner Light Elizabeth Kubler Ross once said, “People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in; their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.” When everything is going well, people tend to only take care of themselves and be selfish. They cut themselves off from one another by building their own walls to keep others away. Who would donate large amounts of money to the needy on a regular basis? Who would volunteer their precious time for outreach programs? Most people would rather spend their time for their own pleasure. However, during times of catastrophe, the scenario changes. People suddenly realize the need to unite and support one another – to spark the flame inside each one’s hearts and spread it to every individual. It is during moments of tragedy and disaster that our true inner light is revealed. Companies institute this strategy in order to inhibit the growth of labor unions; thus, they are able to maintain low cost of production while gaining maximum profits. This example shows that the under privileged people are truly neglected by the government and the society. However, in September 2009, negligence dissipated as unity took place. On September 26, 2009, the Philippines experienced one of the worst flooding in the past decades. Typhoon “Ondoy” devastated Manila and spared no one in its havoc.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
