Per.4World Literature 1# Final Draft25 January 2012Word Count: 1,116Children’s RevelationWithin Madame Bovaryby Gustave Flaubert and Anna Kareninaby Leo Tolstoy, the authors characterize the differences and similarities of Emma’s and Anna’s personalities in terms of the relationship with their child as they plunge deeper into their secret affairs which results in neglecting their maternal role and further isolation. Both leading characters, Emma and Anna shared more than the same fate from their self-indulgent relationships, but as well as a similar reason for infidelity which was dissatisfaction from marriage, and producing children. A child is a symbol of innocence and purity. The children serve as a revelation for the mother’s personalities, Ana’s compassion and Emma’s greed, and an explanation to their infidelity as well as their downfall. A dominant theme in both novels, seclusion of the leading females from society and the household affected the lives of other characters such as leaving their husbands as widowers’ and children as orphans.The bond between Anna and Emma with their children, Sergei, Ana and Berthe, vary from one another as their responses and actions reflect the feelings toward the child, for instance Emma’s ill treatment of Berthe showed resentment and Anna’s adoration for Sergei showed love. At the beginning of Anna Karenina, Anna had a strong and thoughtful relation with her son, Sergei, when she was still with Karenin. In order to maintain the appearance of a wholesome family for his political image, Anna and Karenin had to uphold a sense of unity and stability that
