Scientific, tech, econ c.ii. Moral-political 2. Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1777) a) Discourse on the Arts and Sciences (1750) 3. The future will be better – at least not be worse a) We expect things to be good and better – where is the origin of this idea? b) Faith in progress – the origin? 4. The Enlightenment – centered in France a) Cyclical or progress? For classical western civilization – things are cyclical (better perhaps, but then will be worse) b) “Life on earth is the valley of the shadow of death” – dark ages. c) After the clouds, it makes the light return: “it” = reason, not God, which means “nature” is operating here (the sun is like the reason) d) Enlightenment thinkers were deists – they begin to think that people themselves can control their life, not like medieval time.
