Increasing inequality of opportunity. a.iii. Anti-democratic power? Ex: Citizens United v FEC (2010) 2. Challenge against Basic, fundamental democratic order a) Challenge from terrorism – emerged from 2011 b) Inequality: 1970s reversal: begin to have inequality – not the rising tides raise all boats 3. Where are we: a) “Death tax/ inheritance tax”: affects less than 1% of the population, when 5 million tax free inheritance b) You look at the situation: the wealthier American will be allowed to have more tax-free income, which increases the amount of inequality c) What percent of all wealth in the US does the top 20% of Americans own? c.i. Estimated by average American: 58% c.ii. Actual: about 85% of the wealth c.iii. Ideal: about 32% 4. What’s wrong/right with inequality? a) Is it fair? Is it pro or anti democracy?
