SPOTLIGHT ON BLACK LOYALISTS Fighting for Britain The British promised the Black Loyalists freedom, some food, other provisions, and a farm if they fought for the British side in the American Revolution. Thousands of Black Loyalists fought with the British against the Americans. North to Canada After the Americans won the war, the British gave the Black Loyalists freedom and sent them off to leave the US where they were treated poorly. Approximately half of the Black Loyalists settled in nova scotia, but this meant that there was not enough food and water for everyone. They were paid very little and led a miserable life. The Situation Improves They began to get better jobs and earn more money. By 1812, many felt such a part of the community that they fought against the Americans again in the War of 1812.
