European and America Imperial powers (Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines) Want to drive people out of east Asia o September 1939: Germany invaded Poland, Britian and France declare war o December 7 th 1941: Japan bombed Pearl Harbor 1940- US institute first peacetime draft African American, Anti Fascism and Internationalism 1935: Fascist Italy invades Ethiopia o Last African government that is still run by africans o African American organized to send aid (NY nurses- raise money to send over medical supplies) o Some african americans volunteer to fight off the Italian Military o Occupied after 6 months because Italy used poison Gas Embarrassment that it took them six months to invade Never as strong as the Germans are 1936: General Francisco starts the Spanish Civil War o Abraham Lincoln Battalion- (1936-7) (100 AA volunteer) o Communist internationalist- AA support Discrimination in Mobilization 1939-40: Defense spending and the Depression o Exclusion and service positions African americans are excluded to build anything such as not being able to work on factories and build war materials Air craft people only hire them as janitors o All white AFL Unions, government training programs, US Employment Services They would have these all white unions and only allow you to hire people if they were form the same union therefore excluding african americans o Segregated military units on service (11% accepted blacks)/ marines and army air corms (would not accept blacks at all) AA had no combat training “Double V” campaign o Victory against fascism and racism against US o NAACO Urban League etc. press FDR administration to act against racism in war industries
