QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS goal of qualitative data analysis: to discover something new, to perform interpretive analysis, and identify the meaning of what is seen and heard. to interpret the data, we have texts, images, and transcripts from focus group, transcripts from individual interviews, what we're doing, then, is to try to interpret that data process See the big picture relate the themes, patterns that we're finding to the description of the evaluation question step in to see the detail stepping back to get the big picture, and then going into the data, and then stepping back again it's a systematic process of looking at the data, collected data, to reveal the characteristic of patt erns looking for a pattern not counting how many people say something, trying to understand what is emerging if you're lo oking what multiple participants are saying data-led, therefore, data-limited activity to prepare for the analysis is the creation of field notes a researcher collecting data taking copious notes on a regular basis At the end of each day of doing your qualitative data collection, what are you finding? organize into three different areas: o recognize what has been learned, identifying areas that needs enhanced focus, and then recognize new areas that should be developed o reflection on the description of what happened for that particular day have reflection on the content, and then reflection on the process put some questions that I have to ask o data analysis in qualitative research is an ongoing process to the data collection and the study activity Organize the raw data Preserve data by entering it into a defined system o important for the researcher to be very detailed and very structured in the way they talk and describe the whole perspective. transparency is the key. identify a system for coding o hand coding or use a software like ATLAS.ti, NVivo, and we simply deduce software does not analyze for you - basically a system for organizing and coding search for meaning in the data, o use thematic analysis to interpret the meaning and then draw conclusion o this is an iterative process, so a process that may happen several times work with mostly textual data derived from interview and existing document o if photos and audio recordings, need clear process of how these things are organized data variable also qualitative in nature DATA ANALYSIS SPIRAL important that qualitative data is reflexive, and it works in cycle, and it's iterative, meaning build on one thing continually comparing interaction between theory and data
o What am I finding? What are some of the experience? What are some of the patterns th at are emerging from the data? with "testing", the interpretation of the data against alternative explanation are there alternative explanation that could explain what is going on in this particular situation?
