Kevin Barber Comp II Ben Nickol Paper 2 3/13/08 Before and After Death People are exposed to death throughout their lives and react in different ways . It can be ignored such as in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, or it can affect you similarly to “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien . The Grandmother in O’Conner’s story will not allow death to affect the way she lives while on the other hand First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, who is the main character in O’Brien’s story, is quite changed . Although death occurs every day, it is handled in completely different ways . Lieutenant Cross lives a different life from other Americans . He is fighting in the Vietnam War . He leads men who are fighting for their lives . Although he leads these men to their possible death, death is never really considered . It is thought of as something distant and not as something that could not happen to them . They march carelessly, carrying whatever the
