Issei - Japanese immigrants to NA Nisei - Born in NA immigrants parents nikkei - (plural nikkeis or nikkei ) A Japanese emigrant or a descendant thereof jwho is not a citizen of Japan. Commonly used in Japan to refer to people of Japanese ancestry that are living abroad as citizens of other countries. Both the United states and Canada restricted immigration from Japan In the US, Immigrants were aliens ineligible for citizenship Thus states could deny their access to commercial fishing and the right to own or lease land Because the American constitution bestows full citizenship on the native-born, Issei children could vote and aquire land but experienced discrimination especially in employment. In Canada it appeared that the issei had more civil rights in Comparison to the US however they did not.
