In the very beginning of the 1900s, the Mexican Americans were brought to America to complete the hard labor of the Southwest. By the 1930s the unemployment caused by the Great Depression sent over a million Americans to the area populated by the Mexican Americans. The Anglo Americans put the Mexicans out of there jobs, used their resources, and took their money. “…a change had begun to take place in the Anglo-American stereotype of Mexicans, at least in the Southwest…Anglos…considered Mexicans as foreign, short term labor, who had no rights to welfare benefits (Llano, Rivera, pg.56). The Mexican Americans fought back, participating in labor strikes throughout the Southwest and California. The German Gestapo was placed around the borders of Mexican barrios to keep them under control. The
