Unformatted text preview: OEDIPUS Characters: oedipus, Creon, Jocasta, chorus, Teiresias, Lais (Oedipus' real dad), Polybus (adopted father), Messenger Oedipus is King, plague is going on---children are dying/ no new births Oeipus asks Teiresias what's going on Apollo's oracle--just have to banish kings killer Teiresias won't tell until he's insulted: it's Oedipus Oedipus looks for scapegoat (creon) Polybus is dead--prophecy is wrong Jocasta teller her unfallied prophecy---killed son ANKLES-laius is suspected of having relationships with young boys/ he pierced Oedipus' ankles to kill him curse b/c he was a pedifile--never bare children w/ Jocasta gets hersman as witness messenger--"you're adopted" herdsman saw Lais killed gave Oedipus to messenger they realize the truth Jocasta hangs herself Oedipus blinds himself (blinded when he finally sees)--Teiresus blind but sees as well (meaning when he sees the truth) (ironic) THEMES you're guilty whether you meant to or not blindness---->knowledge fate--escape it or no?? fate--escape it or no?...
