Approach Although my family never attended church, I want occasionally with my grandparents when I was young, and quickly decided if I believed in God, this was certainly not how I would praise Him. When I told a friend that I had never been to a service that I did not sleep through, I was referred to the (nondenominational) Holy United Church. My hopes were that the congregation of this church was loud, lively, and loving (preferably with a big proud gospel choir). I wanted Sister Act, I wanted Lauryn Hill! If these people really believed in God, I wanted them to shout it out from their souls! The Place of Worship The Holy United Church was located along a row of churches right outside Oklahoma City. I parked the car and entered a humble building for the Wednesday evening service. Straight through the double doors was the main service room, with about twenty rows of wooden pews lined with navy fabric. The walls were a cool white with light wooden trim, and the whole church was decorated with artificial but lively looking ivy and flowers to soften the edges. In the front of the room, there was a large space with four rows of chairs for the Sunday choir, and a life-size cross bearing a crown of thorns and two purple and white cloths. To the side of the preacher’s wooden podium were the band’s instruments: an electric bass, a drum set, a keyboard, an organ, and a piano. The aesthetics of the church were simple and unpretentious, showing that the real focus was on the message of the sermon, not what something or someone looks like. As I found a pew to sit at, the band had already begun playing a kind of entry

worship song, which was a soulfully blended harmony of bass, organ, drums, background vocal undulations, and a woman kneeling toward a pew with a microphone praising, screaming, professing the love and the way of the Lord. After the church had filled in a
