Term and definition Image to represent Imperialism: Spreading a country’s power/expanding a country’s territory usually through military force. Industrialization: A process where an economy transfers from agricultural to manufacturing. It is characterized by mass efficient production by machines. Nationalism: Pride/support for one’s own nation. Social Darwinism:The theories and ideas made by Charles Darwin for natural selection applied to people, politics, and economics. Using your knowledge of history and the information you just read, what were the main motivations behind European imperialism? *Make sure you click on the ‘other causes’ link as well.* The main motivations behind European imperialism were industrialization, economy, exploratory, ethnocentrism, political, and religion.
Which of those motivations do you think played the biggest role in imperialism? Why? Which played the smallest role? Why? I believe industrialization played the biggest role in imperialism. I think this because industrialization assisted military technology which indirectly positively influenced their military power. Industrialization also helped European countries to get materials they needed through trading. I think ethnocentrism played the smallest role in European imperialism because ethnocentrism is essentially an antonym of imperialism. If a country is ethnocentric they would not want to deal with other cultures and would want to remain in their country to have the least cultural influence possible. Read through Kipling’s poem. Explain how that poem, coupled with the increasing idea of Social Darwinism, influenced European imperialism. What is the “white man’s burden”? POOL – WORLD
AFRICA Background Explain at least three factors why European empires desired to colonize Africa.
