**TET OFFENSIVE world affairs 3.Paris Negotiations -January 1968, U.S. launched a massive provincial attack -political point to disrupt American politics, and a military point -all across South Vietnam, even seemingly safe areas were overrun by these attacks -parts of Saigon taken under control by N. Vietnamese -shocking attack -Viet Cong and allies took very severe casualties -from a military standpoint, they lost the offensive (20:1 casualties) -it was an offensive launched on a holiday -Viet Cong were driven back eventually, areas cleaned out -militarily an American victory -political disaster for Johnson administration -U.S. had been expanding its effort to control world affairs since the end of WW2, and this was the opposite of that -My Lai, South Vietnam village -U.S. forces entered, were fired, and soldiers were crazy -were told to kill everybody, burned every house -a rampage outside of all military conduct -Why? Civilians often got caught in the crossfire -hard to tell who was on your side -450, bulk of people living in village, killed
