Scottie Hill Creative Listening Concert of Choice Report November 14, 2013 Percussion Ensemble and African Ensemble Concert After attending the Percussion Ensemble performance, I was finally able to understand and experience what dissonance was, along with enjoying many unique pieces throughout the night. As the first piece began (I cannot recall the title), the overall sound was extremely dissonant to my ears. However, as the piece continued, and the melody looped a few times, my listening caught on and it became more clear to me. The idea of just percussion instruments playing a familiar tune was exciting to my ears, and although it started with a dissonant sound, I enjoyed experiencing and noticing that for the first time. Max Witt’s programmatic piece about his potbelly pig fully engaged my listening senses. Since it was stated before the beginning of the piece that is was programmatic, the musical aspects throughout the whole piece allowed for wonderful imagery.
