Andrew Bernstein HD 116 November 29 , 2007 Research Paper 2 Development of Children of Lesbian Parents There has long been debate in the academic field over whether children of homosexual parents are somehow poorly developed or if their alternative parentage negatively affects them . Judges in family courts have used a parent’s sexual orientation in deciding custody issues , as well as in issues of adoption and foster care, usually deciding against the homosexual individual . In more recent years , through scientific studies and experiments such as the ones discussed further in this paper , it has been widely agreed upon that there are no negative outcomes on children of homosexual parents . Some argue that there are small differences in parenting styles and development of gender roles , but overall the belief is now drastically different than it was twenty years ago . In 2004 , MacCullum and Golombok conducted a follow-up on a longitudinal study of children of lesbian couples , single mothers, and heterosexual parents. The results that they found are consistent with the other study’s findings in that there are no
