VLAN Trunking ProtocolUnit 9:VLAN Trunking ProtocolCCNA 3 – Version 3.1
VLAN Trunking ProtocolIntroduction to VLAN Trunking•VLAN trunking usestagged framesto allowmultiple VLANsto be carried throughout alarge switched network oversharedbackbones•Two trunking protocols:–IEEE 802.1Q(widely implemented)–Cisco’s Inter-Switch Link (ISL)- a proprietarytrunking protocol that can be implemented in Cisconetworks•Once a network is configured with VTP, manyof the VLAN configuration tasks are automatic
VLAN Trunking ProtocolA Trunk is…•Aphysical and logical connectionbetween twoswitches across which network traffic travels•A single transmission channel between two points(usually switching centers)•A point-to-point link that supports several VLANs
VLAN Trunking ProtocolAnother Look at Trunking
VLAN Trunking ProtocolBefore and After Trunking•Before:Each switch is uses two physical links so that each portcarries traffic for asingleVLAN. Simplest way of implementinginter-switch VLAN communication, but does not scale well.•After:Trunking bundles multiple virtual links over one physicallink by allowing the traffic for several VLANs to travel over asingle cable between the switches (conserves switch ports)
VLAN Trunking ProtocolTrunking Operation•Two types of trunking mechanisms:–frame filtering (brief look at)–frame tagging (focus is here)
VLAN Trunking ProtocolFrame Filtering(not as common)
VLAN Trunking ProtocolFrame Tagging(the standard)•Frame Tagging–adopted as the standard trunkingmechanism by IEEE–assigns an identifier to the frames; makesmanagement easier with faster delivery offrames–Most common tagging schemes forEthernet segments are:•ISL–Cisco proprietary Inter-Switch Linkprotocol.•802.1Q–IEEE standard that will be focused onin this section.
VLAN Trunking ProtocolFrame Tagging & Encapsulation Methods•Frame tagging places aunique identifierintheheader of each frameas it is forwardedthroughout the network backbone–identifier is examined by each switch before anybroadcasts or transmissions are made to otherswitches, routers, or end-station devices.–Last switch removes the identifier before the frameis transmitted to the target end station–Frame tagging functions atLayer 2and requireslittle processing or administrative overhead
VLAN Trunking ProtocolIEEE 802.1Q vs. ISL•Both areEthernetframe taggingmechanisms•Both protocols maintain VLANinformation as traffic flows between theswitches•IEEE 802.1Q–The VLAN ID (4 byte field) is inserted intothe frame•ISL–The frame is encapsulated with a headerthat contains a VLAN ID
VLAN Trunking ProtocolTrunking Implementation•To create or configure a VLAN trunk ona Cisco IOS command-based switch:•Step 1)–configure the port first as a trunk•Step 2)–specify the trunk encapsulation
VLAN Trunking ProtocolTrunking Implementation•Before attempting to configure a VLAN trunk on aport, determine what encapsulation the port cansupport with the following command:
