The Role of Meaningand MemoryConnectionsLecture 5.4
The Benefit of Deeper ProcessingGenerally speaking, the deeper the processing associated with specific material, the greater the odds that this information will be encoded into long termmemory.Further, this increases the odds that this information will be retrievable from longterm memory storageFinally, this is true regardless of the learner/memorizer’s intention to learn!
Why is This Though? It turns out that this phenomenon has less to do with encoding information intolong-term memory and more to do with being able to access it when it is neededThis ease of access is determined by the organization of memories in the brainitselfImagine the difference between finding at item to buy in a well organized department storecompared to one in which there was no organization at all (just heaps and heaps of stuff)
