Describe what this drill would be like. A stand in was the daily routine of standing in the trenches , half an hour before dawn, waiting for a German attack. 2. What were some reasons you volunteered to join the war? Most of my friends had The pay was good and I earned a dollar and ten cents a day The chance of travelling overseas was an opportunity not to be missed. 3. Describe what is it like living in the trenches? No dashing cavalry charges, no cheers from grateful citizens and no prizes to be won. Only the endless tedium of trench life, with its mud-filled landscape, unburied bodies and lice -ridden uniforms. 4. What are some of the jobs you do in the trenches? Carrying duck-boards to provide solid footing over the mud, laying barbed wire in No Man’s Land and standing sentry anxiously awaiting a German attack 5. What happened to your friend in the war? My friends had been killed in action. George, on the other hand, had been wounded three times. He was shipped to England for treatment after each wound and always returned, convinced that he would live through the war and return to his wife and two children back in Canada.
