BIOL 1011 Mid‐term exam study guide Unit 1 Know and understand the ‘properties/characteristics of life’ Be able to list the hierarchy of life in order (atom, molecule, organelle, etc.) Know the differences between species, population, ecosystem, organism, etc. Understand the levels of organization of living things (cell, tissue, organ, etc.) Differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Be specific and know details. Types of organisms in the various domains (Archaea, Plantae, etc.). List several common ones for each group. Key aspects of a hypothesis and/or a theory. Types of, and uses for, experimental controls. Know what a positive control is and what a negative control is. Be able to give a specific definition. Understand how to relate observations to proper hypotheses based on those observations (and vice versa). This means you need to know the experimental method is GREAT detail. Understand the relationship between experiments and hypotheses.
