English 1001 – English Composition Spring 2021 Thomas Cherry [email protected] Office Hours (location and time subject to change) MWF – 8:00 – 10:00 This English 1001 class seeks to equip students to write in an academic, and perhaps more importantly, an original way so as to fit in with the level of writing expected from classrooms across the college curriculum. To achieve this, we will be learning from the example of others through close reading and discussion of a diverse sample of writings as well as practicing the expression of our own unique academic voice through responses to presented ideas and research of original ones. This semester will be about trying to break down and understand the many voices going on around us as well as shaping and adding our own voice. REQUIRED TEXT Malek, Joyce, Chris Carter, Rhiannon Scharnhorst eds. Student Guide to English Composition 1001, 2020-2021 . Plymouth, MI: Hayden-McNeil, 2019. My hope is that these will become a digital space for us to share our ideas in an open and honest, yet respectful, way that might stand in for our inability to meet in person. To that end, you will also be expected to respond in a significant way to at least one of your classmates . An original post should be at least 150 – 200 words. An ideal reply will be at least 50 – 100 words. Essays: English Composition 1001 begins by examining how texts are constructed to achieve certain effects. The first assignment is an exercise in summary and close reading. The
