BIMM100 Fall 2008 Problem Set 9 1. You find that a certain chicken virus you’re studying has a single stranded RNA genome. a. If this is not a retrovirus, what protein is required for the virus to replicate in the chicken cell? RNA replicase b. What type(s) of RNA viruses MUST carry this protein with them? Why? A (-) strand RNA virus, other RNA viruses could use their genomic RNA as mRNA to produce RNA replicase after entering the cell. A (-) strand virus must create the (+) strand of the RNA which will be used as the mRNA to create viral proteins. To create that (+) strand though, RNA replicase must already exist. c. This chicken virus contains a capsid composed of 5 copies of the Banana protein. Why is this usually the case rather than having a capsid composed of 5 different proteins? Viruses must carry and synthesize all of their genome and proteins with them as they travel from cell to cell. To do so efficiently, they need to have a streamlined genome. By making the capsid
