HEAT & HEAT MEASUREMENT HEAT & HEAT MEASUREMENT Heat – a fundamental form of energy that can be transformed from one form to another. It can also be transferred from one point to another by virtue of the motion of molecules brought about by the difference in temperature. A B Heat flow T A > T B Heat flow stops once T A = T B ; a system that is said to be in thermal equilibrium. A B Heat flow T A < T B

HEAT & HEAT MEASUREMENT HEAT & HEAT MEASUREMENT Heat Quantity (Q) = mc∆T is the total amount of heat needed to lose or gain by any amount of substance to change temperature. Where: m mass of the substance (g, kg or lb) ∆T change in temperature (C o , K, F o ) ∆T = final temperature, T f – initial temperature, T o c specific heat (C o-1 or K -1 ) Note: T + ∆T + Q Heat absorption/gain T - ∆T - Q Heat release/loss Specific Heat (c) – the amount of heat needed to lose or gain to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by 1 o .

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
