Race and Gender Part II Roberts “Reproduction in Bondage” - Shattering the bonds of mother hood o Denied rights of motherhood, slave masters owned their children even before birth o Children were separated from mothers o Children were auctioned in front of their mothers Government sponsored event- helped conduct the sales o Children were hired or apprenticed to labor for as long as ten years Started really young – “children’s squad” By eighteen they were ready to labor in the fields Slaves Child’s routine dictated by the master Master exerted punishment and mothers were not allowed to intercede Girls fell prey to sexual abuse Children witnessed brutal force against their parents Children named by master Reinforced their lack of identity and subservience To their master rather than the parents Mothers were not allowed to take time off to care for their children Brought infants to the fields Had to combine mothering with hard labor
