I have seen inmates who suffered severe schizophrenia and were kept in the same room with the other inmates, creating an unstable environment for the others. I believe inmates how suffer from severe mental illness such us schizophrenia or personality disorders , putting in danger other inmates and staff, should be forced to receive treatment and medication, in order to get them back into reality. Cusack, Steadman & Herring ( 2010), discuss in their article about coercion to receive treatment in jail that “Most participants in this multisite study did not perceive coercion in the jail diversion process”. ( p. 1). Some inmates are in jail because of illegal drugs or violent behavior, and understand they need to receive treatment, otherwise they will get in trouble with the law again.
