The article I chose is called “ The Bolivia I didn’t want to know”, written by Becca Leaphart”, because it shows how the author demonstrates acculturation. The article talks about tow tourist who go to Bolivia to learn Spanish and find themselves with a different culture than they expected. These Americans were expecting a united indigenous country, but in reality, there was an important social division. The type of acculturation the author demonstrated is called marginalization that according to Shiraev & Levy (2010), “it involves the rejection of both cultures. Critics of this classification maintain that it should be expanded to include, for example, a greater focus on subcultures and the interactions between cultures.”(p. 309). The author initially admired the Bolivian culture, however, the encounter with the two cultures, Aymaras and middle-class people, made her realized she did not like the mistreatment the middle-class people were giving indigenous people.
